When selecting ice skates it is extremely important that they fit. Do not buy skates you can "grow into", or rent larger skates to accommodate extra socks. The best socks for skating are thin and well fitting - not bulky.
Your skates should be snug and provide support particularly around the ankle. Start by loosening the laces all the way down to the toe. Place your foot in the skate and ensure that your heel is firmly in the back of the skate. You will not want your heel sliding up and down.
Firmly and evenly lace the skate through your ankle area. At this point make sure you bend your knee. Continue lacing all the way to the top of the skate. Secure any excess lacing to the skate hooks on a figure skate or around your ankle on a hockey skate.
You should be able to easily walk around on your skates off ice. If you cannot, your skates is either too big, not tied properly, or is too broken down.
